BEACON OF SERVICE
2008 Community Service Project
The key to the continued success of our Order is our participation in Community Service. Each time a member or Chapter actively participates in a community activity, the name of Eastern Star is placed out for all to see.
There are many ways to participate. Work at a food bank, deliver food to the elderly, read to children at your local school, volunteer at a hospital, participate in a community clean up, work at a drug rehabilitation clinic, or volunteer at a domestic violence clinic. The opportunities are endless.
Make an IMPACT in your community by participating and volunteering for a minimum of FIFTY hours of Community Service. Upon reaching this goal, you will be presented with the 2008 community Service Pin. You will be able to wear the pin with pride knowing that you have left a mark on your community!
UCLA JONSSON CANCER CLINIC
The 2008 Worthy Grand Matron has chosen the UCLA Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center (JCCC) as California’s Special Project. Named the “Best Cancer Center in California” for the 8th year in a row in a US News and World report by a group of board-certified physicians across the country, The JCCC has a well-earned international reputation for cancer research. They carry a full range of services, and have access to one of the premiere medical centers, research and teaching universities in the nation.
RELAY FOR LIFE
The 2008 Worthy Grand Matron has asked that members continue to support Relay for Life as one of California's Special Projects. Relay for Life is a community gathering, where everyone can participate in the fight against cancer. By participating in the Relay for Life, members will do their part in raising funds for Cancer research and or supporting those who are participating by volunteering of the Relay.
In conjunction with active participation in Relay for Life events, state officers and others will have a special pin offered for sale to our members, family and friends. This pin will represent our commitment to the fight against cancer, with all proceeds going to the American Cancer Society to further their efforts in finding a cure for this dreaded disease.
